The Responsible Mining Foundation (RMF)
is pleased to invite you to a web panel on
Context and focus
While primary extraction of certain raw materials remains necessary to support economic development, the achievement of the SDG’s, and industrial and consumer demand, we need to be honest about how changes in climate exacerbate the existing mining-related risks and impacts on the environment, local communities, and workers. And why responsible mining matters.
Beyond the direct carbon footprint of mine site activity (with the vast majority of direct greenhouse gas emissions being directly tied to energy consumption), mining is the first link in most global value chains. And mined commodities are central to ‘green energy’. In the context of the Paris Climate Agreement, and the central role that mined commodities play in everyday life, it is important to consider fully the direct and indirect impacts and the externalised costs of mining activities now and for the future.
